I heard from a member a few weeks ago, expressing their disappointment, urgency and disgust with the governments over the years in regards to amount a person can receive. CPP-D is the most difficult to obtain and be approved for in Canada. There’s the application process, appeals, possible court tribunal hearings, all in hopes of being approved. The member stated they became disabled in the early 2000’s and it took them almost 3 years to be approved. At that time, they received a estimated monthly amount of around $970 per month. Now, fast forward to 2025. They receive now approximately $1270 per month. It took almost 25 years to see their monthly disability increase by $300 a month. We all know in the last 4 years or so, cost of living has skyrocketed, from rents, food, etc but yet there has been no decent increase to the benefit. The CPD is essentially useless as it isn’t affixed to just the disabled persons income of CPP-D, but also a spouse, partner, etc and in many cases the CPD is declined for individual who is disabled. Any government that sits in power that justifies this pathetic excuse of a benefit, of which many recipients are now become homeless, should be ashamed of themselves. They need to show some courage and initiative in at minimum, doubling the benefit without factoring anyone else’s income into the equation. The government knows who is on CPP-D and the CRA knows who is as well. There is absolutely no excuse for this, especially when the Charter states about life, security and liberty. Our disabled shouldn’t be discriminated against and longer.
