Some may not be aware, but the idea behind the WSIB (or WCB as it was known as) was to protect employers when their employees are injured on the job. The WSIB is a provincial government body and most industries are required to pay the WSIB a premium for this protection. Anyone that has dealt with the WSIB may or may not have had a helpful experience, but should you be an injured employee, you would receive approximately 60% of your income. At this point and time, that amount isn’t enough to survive on, never mind attending all the medical appointments and rehabilitation WSIB requires you to. Instead of the province refunding the employer premium, the income rate should be increased to 100% and not treated like some sort of welfare system. Contrary to some Conservative or government thinking, most injured workers are NOT gaming the system and want to return to work once they get past the potential trauma of their injury. It’s clear the current Conservative government is nowhere near in touch with the reality facing injured workers today.
